After compiling ample athlete feedback on the rigorous process of securing brand deals independently, and with the professional insight of our CEO, Justice Bartley, we set out to solve for each of the major issues impeding athlete payment. The product underwent several months of extensive scope of work planning and development prior to commencement of the latest MVP for investor pitches.

Initially, the product was set to be a mobile platform for athlete to athlete connections and athlete to brand partnerships, however this model distanced the average sports fanatic from our user base. To bring fans into the fold, our product underwent a massive shift and ultimately created two instances of the app itself depending on the user’s chosen onboarding that would also dictate overall app experience and available features: Star or Fan.

As the Lead Product Designer on the team, I was able to decisively create the user journey and information architecture, along with the design system and UI for the app. Beginning with user flows, sitemaps, and revisiting our user personas, I then constructed an intuitive and non-invasive onboarding experience catered to permitting access to our many app functions and maintaining high user retention. Following this, the home, explore, live and reels, profile, and most importantly, fan marketplace and star deals sections were all respectively designed to flow seamlessly into one another.

Most recently, our MVP has been fully established and iterated four times over as a usable prototype and is in the midst of platform development and API integration to once and for all realize the product for our first post-launch A/B testing at collegiate campuses, semi-pro, and professional sports leagues around the United States, namely the NBA and WNBA. The agile approach taken from research to ideation and high-fidelity design to development lended our app the time to correct for pain points and less-than-optimized interfaces prior to the investment cycle.

ASTN, a sports technology startup, strives to service all potential parties interested in the realm of sports and commerce, combining many approaches taken by industry competitors and ambitiously crafting a platform for shopping, social following, NIL deal inception, and world news updates. My role in the company extended beyond UX designer, and reached into the realm of product management, brand designer, and development team leader throughout the near year and a half I have spent with the team. Ultimately, we are still in the early stages of launching our service nationwide and eventually internationally, while currently outreaching to brands and businesses worldwide, partnering with athletes of all levels, and securing investments for company expansion.
