Overview

In an age of consumerism, overconsumption, and social isolationism it can be difficult to maintain focus and remain disciplined in our personal journeys towards self-improvement. The challenges that lie before any individual person today can seem insurmountable at times and often wear down our internalized self-efficacy, deterring us from further pursuing our dreams. Are there not methods in our modern age to garner excellence within us?

By investigating the personal goals and long-term ambitions of six college-aged students, along with their experiences in attempting and failing to establish positive habits, I compiled ample data to inform the development of a project timeline, scope of work, and research intention.

How do we make the notion of self-improvement a perceivable objective within reach?

In researching the adversities faced by six college-aged students, I found that the primary barrier to success in achieving the goals we set out for ourselves came down to inconsistent timeframes for dedication, lack of structured avenues to accomplishment, and an inability to see substantive progress, leading to decreased confidence. However, within each and every participant was a deep-rooted calling to pursue their goals despite the difficulty in dealing with the aforementioned barriers to success.

Based on the feedback provided in the user research phase of the project, I began by targeting the three most commonly recurring pain points faced when striving for success in any given skill set or hobby: lack of time, structure, and measured progress. If users find it difficult to carve out time to their craft, why not take the added weight of planning exercises and habit-building curriculums off their shoulders? This was the first step into creating what would eventually become a full catalog of “skill trees” catered to whatever physical, mental, or digital task a person could hope to improve at. The app structure followed this line of thought to the end, providing avenues for the users to not only learn about their chosen skills, but also track their progress over time.

Following the several month design of the product prototype, I set out to test the early-stage application on target users. This process informed many decisions in the next revision, from adding social applications to the product to incentivize mutual-accountability between users chasing after their goals, to enhancing the reward system in-app for greater user retention and sense of accomplishment while reinforcing the product’s habit-building intent. All sorts of new features sprouted from these conversations, including community leaderboards, personal streaks, UI revisions, information architecture optimization, and dozens of new skill trees.

As the first project of my UX Design career, I am incredibly proud of the time and dedication I put forth in addressing each and every aspect of the scope and research question established. Over the months I spent designing this novel idea, I learned an immense amount of design techniques, research methodologies, and representational strategies that I carry with me to this day. Overall, I am satisfied with the turnout of the product and how it was able to solve for the three primary issues notated by the research group, but hope to one day come back to the backlog and fully develop the app so that I might truly aid many people in fulfilling their dreams.
